❂ –– The forest was where he lived after
              he had managed to free himself,
              and the forest was where he stayed
              whenever he was finished with any
              kind of work the couple he was living
              with gave to him.  In his free time,
              Hans would build a small pit for a
              fire, sit with his back against a boulder
              or tree and make the flames dance.
              A little leading of the hand could get
              the flames to jump, and a pull would
              guide a string of the flame to separate,
              dancing just above his hand or above
              the pit.
